Ro-pax ships, 2025

437 ro-pax ships reported to THETIS-MRV for 2025, emitting 13.7 Mt of CO₂. Efficiency is measured as g CO₂/pax·nm and, for freight, g CO₂/t·nm freight.

Ro-pax ships carry passengers and freight, and THETIS reports CO₂ per transport work for each: per passenger-mile and per tonne-mile of freight. A freight-heavy ferry looks poor per passenger and good per tonne, a passenger-heavy one the other way round, so both are shown. Passenger figures stay the benchmark for allowance gaps.

Notes

  • Medians and rankings use 408 full-year reports with fuel; part-year and zero-fuel reports count towards totals only.
  • THETIS reports time at sea on EU-scope voyages only, not time in port. CO₂ at berth is the closest measure of port activity it publishes.
  • Speed and distance are derived from the published ratios; THETIS has no distance column.
